Recently I was having a discussion with a colleague around personal strengths versus weaknesses, and where our attention should be focused.
I am firm believer that strengths are our assets and they will help us achieve wonderful things, but if we are not aware of our weaknesses and how they affect not only ourselves but those we live and work with, we are missing great opportunities for personal and professional success.
In a recent post by Marshall Goldsmith he perfectly sums up the “why” of being willing to identify and manage all of one’s behaviors.
That was the moment when change became possible. He realized that he was not only hurting his employees' and company's chances for success — he was hurting his own chance for success. He realized that he could shed his "excessive need to be me" and not be a phony.
The payoff was enormous. Within a year his scores on giving recognition were in line with his other positive scores on leadership.
What’s holding you back?
